Cambodia Gambling Dens
There is an interesting story to the Cambodia gambling dens that sit just across the border from nearby Thailand, where casino gaming is not legal. Eight casinos are situated in a relatively tiny area in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia casinos is in a prime destination, a 3 to 4 hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the two most popular gambling locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a thriving business with Thai blue-collar workers and travelers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The astonishing income accrued from the casinos ranges from 7.5 million dollars to over 12.5 million, and there are a number of controls constraints for gambling den ownership. Ownership is assumed to be largely Thai; still, financial sources are vague. The borders are ceremoniously open from 9:00 a.m. to 17:00, and although visas are apparently necessary to pass, there are means around this, as is true of many borders.
The initial Cambodia gambling dens opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving just a single gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a docked bateau gambling hall, contains one hundred and fifty slots and 60 table games. The Naga river boat is open all hours with forty two tables of mini-baccarat banque, 4 tables of twenty-one, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The first gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown quickly followed. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains three hundred slot machines and 70 gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slot machine games and ninety six table games, including eighty seven baccarat (the most beloved game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machine games and 66 of the common table games, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the eight casinos in Poipet, again in a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machine games and 97 casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an all-inclusive resort and hotel complex that contains many amenities in addition to the gambling hall, which has ten thousand square feet of 130 slots and 88 table games.
